Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the practice of improving search visibility through the use of paid strategies.

With SEM, brands pay for advertisements to appear as search results on search engine results pages (SERPs). They target specific keywords so that when a person searches for such terms, an ad from the brand appears. The brand is only charged if the user clicks on the ad.

Paid search ads can be featured on nearly every search results page. These sponsored ads are usually at the top and bottom of the page. They possess an “Ad” label to alert users that it is a paid placement.
